Toyota and Tesla Presenting Electric RAV 4 at the LA Auto Show

Toyota shot out a tweet a few hours ago saying “Toyota and Tesla will debut the RAV4-EV at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show in November”. As some of you will remember Tesla announced a few months ago that they had converted a RAV 4 and a Lexus RX for Toyota, Toyota also bought a 50 million dollar stake in Tesla a little earlier in the year, before Tesla’s much touted IPO. The LA Auto Show runs from the 19th to the 28th November this year and is known as one of the bigger international Auto Shows, it also takes place in the heart of California which by and large, will be the biggest market for both electric vehicles and hybrids in the US. Tesla Built an Electric RAV 4 and a Lexus RX For Toyota

In a move that has even industry insiders reeling, a source deep within Toyota has outlined 2 new all electric models that are currently being developed in a joint Tesla-Toyota deal. Surprisingly Tesla is said to have delivered the first two prototypes last Friday on July the 10th. The popular RAV 4 SUV and premium SUV the Lexus RX underwent a full electric conversion, apparently the SUV’s were chosen due to their ability to carry the extra weight of the lithium-ion battery packs without suspension and chassis strengthening. Hybrid Cars Sales Jump 20% in May

US hybrid cars sales saw a 20% jump in sales in May, the overall car market saw a 12.3% increase in sales so hybrids are outperforming the market by a large margin. The best seller is still the Toyota Prius (14,248 units), making up over half of all sales and the break out performance by the Ford Fusion Hybrid, with sales up 64% (2,486 units) for May, has surprised more than a few analysts. Toyota is still seeing some sales damage thought to be caused by the recent recall-nightmare with both the Camry Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid seeing a drop in sales, this buyer caution surrounding Toyota cars may be responsible for the jump in sales of non-Toyota hybrids like the Fusion, the Nissan Ultima Hybrid (+253.6% | 1,167 units) and the Chevy Silverado Hybrid (+179.4% | 299 units). The Plug-In Toyota Prius

2011 is set to see the introduction of a plug-in capable Toyota Prius, capable of charging it’s lithium-ion cells from either a 110v or 220v household electrical outlet. Toyota currently has 500 of the plug-in hybrids on the road in Japan, Europe and the US for testing purposes, all of these test vehicles are fitted with “black box” data recorders that transmit detailed telemetry on daily activity back to Toyota in order to gauge how the vehicles will be used when they hit the market in early Lanjut →

The Hybrid Toyota RAV4

Toyota recently announced a hybrid version of its famous RAV4 SUV, coming in 2012 and also made it clear via a quote from Koei Saga, Toyota’s managing officer of hybrid system development, that “Toyota needs to accelerate the 2020 goal to hybridize all the Toyota models.” Having all of the models that Toyota builds running on gas/electric hybrid platforms as quickly as 2020 is quite some goal.
