First Pictures Of The VW Bulli – A Retrotastic 60s Van
VW are bringing back their classic 60s van with the Bulli concept, pictured above and below, the retro electric van features an iPad as the centre console and has seating for 6 in a unique 3+3 configuration.
The VW Bulli has a 40kWh battery pack promising a 180+ mile range and has an electric motor producing 85kW. VW haven’t said for certain whether they will build the Bulli or not, however the rumour flying around the floor of the Geneva Motorshow is that they are planning on a production run, sooner rather than later.
A surprising number of cars at Geneva this year have iPad-consoles, an interesting trend and a huge media boost for the already media savvy Apple Inc. There are a couple of issues with these iPad consoles though, firstly, having an iPad sitting on the dashboard is going to encourage smash-and-grab thefts (in the same way people stole cassette players in the 80s and CD players in the 90s). Secondly, and perhaps ironically considering the iPad 2 is rumoured to be announced today by Apple, will these console be compatible with new versions of the iPad? Or will all of these iPad cars be yesterdays news by tomorrow?
“In this vehicle, Volkswagen is finishing what it started in 2001: ten years ago, the vision of a new Bulli led to an unforgettable concept vehicle known as the Microbus. But some visions need to mature before they yield something new. Now, the time is right for this vision. That is because the concept was sharpened, and the necessary, sustainable technologies are now at hand. More compact and affordable than the earlier concept vehicle, it is now being shown in Geneva. The new Bulli – powered by an electric motor and fitted with six seats and infotainment control via iPad.” VW PR
If you miss the 60s then cross your fingers, you might have a Bulli in your garage before you know it.
