New “Gas Tax” Proposed For Electric Cars

Washington state is mulling over a move to implement a gas tax equivalent on electric cars, amounting to about $100 USD per year the tax is said to be aimed at levelling the playing field as electric cars do not pay for gas or the included gas tax.

Some have called the move idiotic, citing that the number of electric cars on the road is minimal at the moment and thus the revenue from the tax would be negligible, concerns also exist that an “electric car tax” could put off some prospective new car buyers.

The new tax hasn’t been passed, it’s only been suggested by Washington at this stage. Hopefully they’ll at least hold off until 5-10% of the cars on the road are electric, however it doesn’t seem likely.
