The British Government announced today a new scheme to encourage consumers to buy electric and plug-in hybrid cars, a £5,000 ($7,800 USD)  grant will be awarded to people who purchase electric (or partially electric) cars starting in 2011.

So far the Mitsubishi i-MiEV will be the only car covered by the scheme however it will be joined by the Nissan Leaf in March. It is expected that the scheme will cover 10+ new models by the end of 2011.

The US Government already has a remarkably smilar scheme in place offering a $7,500 USD federal tax rebate to people who purchase electric cars like the Tesla Roadster and Nissan Leaf.

Both France and China both have similar programs in place with China offering $7,370 and France offering $6,619.
