Tesla To Build 2,000 RAV4 Electric SUVs – Delivery In 2012

Tesla’s intrepid CEO Elon Musk announced yesterday that Tesla will be building 2,000 electric RAV4 SUVs for Toyota with a delivery date of 2012. The first of these RAV4s will be on display at the LA Autoshow next week, all we have to go on so far are the teaser images above and below.

“This is a test fleet,” Elon Musk said in a conference call yesterday. “The initial phase is in the couple thousand-unit range.”

Toyota will reportedly pay $60 million for the deal, this is on top of their $50 million investment in Tesla earlier this year, the two companies seem to be growing ever closer which has been increasing investor confidence in Tesla.

The Tesla/Toyota RAV4 is expected to have a 100-150 mile range and is widely expected to use the advanced battery system from the upcoming Tesla Model S rather than the Tesla Roadster.

We’ll be watching events unfold in LA very closely and will update as news becomes available.
