Prius Sales Surpass 2 Million Worldwide

Toyota announced today that Prius sales surpassed the 2,000,000 mark by the end of September 2010 with the total sales figure being close to 2,012,000. The Prius has been on sale since 1997, a time when many people didn’t know what a hybrid car was, and is widely credited as being the “godfather” of the hybrid market.

Prius sales continue to increase with the sales figures from the first 9 months of 2010 already eclipsing the yearly sales total from 2009 (and any previous year). Hybrid sales generally see a significant bump during gasoline price increases and the volatility in the oil market has playing into Toyota’s hands over the past few years.

Toyota now has some significant rivals emerging into the hybrid car space, big automakers like Chevrolet, Honda and Nissan are all turning out Prius alternatives that are garnering a lot of interest. Toyota is planning a plug-in version of the Prius for 2012, a car that is expected to be a big seller both with new hybrid buyers and current Prius owners, may of whom complain about the lack of a plug-in option on past and current models.
