The Audi e-tron Spyder – Diesel Electric Hybrid
Audi has unveiled one of the most prominent standout vehicles of the Paris Motorshow so far, it’s called the Audi e-tron Spyder and this diesel electric hybrid has a list of remarkable capabilities. With a range of 1,000 km on a single 50 litre tank of diesel (621 miles – 13.21 gallons, which works out to 128 mpg), that is phenomenal fuel economy from any car, let alone a luxury sports car like this.
Audi of course has the benefit of its experience building turbo diesel LeMans racers, cars that require power, reliability and extreme economy so it’s no surprise that Audi went diesel with the e-tron hybrid, the diesel engine is also capable of running on bio-diesel, which could come in very handy as fuel prices continue to climb.
The e-tron can sprint from 0-62 in 4.4 seconds and has a limited top speed of 155mph. The electric only range is 31 miles with power coming from twin electric motors and a lithium-ion battery array. Although Audi has not announced plans to produce the Spyder, it is clearly evident that these technologies are all destined for future Audi models. A Turbo diesel hybrid with a 128 mpg rating and the ability to run 30+ miles on electric power alone is a car that would sell very well in both Europe and North America.
