Porsche is road testing 3 new all electric Boxster Coupés
Porsche is pushing hard into both the hybrid and electric car technology arenas this year and the official announcement yesterday that they have already developed and deployed 3 100% electric Boxsters for daily road testing in and around Stuttgart only seems to reaffirm this push into the brave new world of electric propulsion. History buffs will be quick to point out the Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of Porsche, was building and racing both hybrid and all electric cars around the turn of the century so it seems only fitting that Porsche would set its sights on developing modern cars that echo the forward thinking of the company’s founder.
Porsche is currently racing a hybrid version of the 911 GT3 R and is selling a hybrid version of its Cayenne SUV, Porsche also rolled out a new model called the 918 Spyder Hybrid at the Geneva Motorshow this year which took the motoring world by storm, so much so that they are apparently going to put the car into an originally unintended limited production run.
Michael Macht, the President and CEO of Porsche AG was quoted as saying “We will definitely be offering electric sports cars in the future, but such a concept only makes sense if it offers performance and a cruising range comparable to that of a sports car today.” Most industry analysts are predicting that battery technology will improve to the point of offering gasoline-comparible milage to electric cars by around 2015, we’d like to think that Porsche will follow Tesla’s lead by releasing an all electric Boxster a little sooner than that but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
